A note on Standing Rock

I haven’t written about the ongoing protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline project taking place at Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota. Long, thoughtful takes on the issues can be found here, here, here, here, and especially here.

Last night, in below freezing weather, police turned water cannons on the protesters. There were also reports of police firing rubber bullets and launching tear gas in the crowds.

I don’t have a lot to add to what others have already written, but I do want to draw your attention to the beautiful short film embedded above. I think it nicely captures the issues at stake for the protesters, and shines another spotlight on the troubling trend toward the militarization of police in this country.
